Academy in the Rother Valley
ULT is delighted to be the proposed sponsor of a new academy in the Rother Valley which will replace Midhurst Grammar School, Midhurst Intermediate School and Herbert Shiner School. It will be co-educational, free of charge and open to 1,500 students of all abilities and of all faiths and none. The proposed academy will offer a full range of academic subjects and a specialism of science and maths with the major themes of business and enterprise and ICT running throughout the curriculum.
ULT will be partnered by Winchester College which will play an important role in accelerating academic improvement at the academy. Under a Memorandum of Understanding, Winchester College will help develop the curriculum, share teaching materials and best practice and run joint professional development sessions.
An independent public consultation conducted by Dame Jocelyn Barrow was completed in May and the full report will be published soon. Subject to the outcome of formal consultations and subsequent approvals, the new 11-18 academy will open in January 2009. The proposal is part of a wider consultation about the reorganisation of education in the county which sees the current three tier structure being replaced by a two tier arrangement.
As sponsor of the proposed academy, ULT is working in close partnership with the Department for Children, Schools and Families and West Sussex County Council and aims to deliver successfully an academy in the Rother Valley that will be recognised widely as a centre of excellence.
