Accrington Academy

Accrington Academy is proposed to replace Accrington Moorhead Sports College. It will be co-educational, free of charge and open to students of all abilities and of all faiths and none. It will have 1,150 places for 11 to 18 year olds, including a Sixth Form.

It will open in September 2008 in the predecessor school’s buildings on Queens Road West whilst construction of a new multi million pound building and refurbishment of some of the existing buildings takes place on the same site.

The proposed academy will offer a broad and balanced curriculum. As well as all the subjects you would expect to find being taught at a school, the academy will have a specialism. The proposed specialism at Accrington will be mathematics and sport, supported by the themes of business and enterprise and ICT. The specialism has been chosen to reflect the needs and interests of the academy’s students and the employment prospects in the area.

Andrew Bateman, Head Teacher at the predecessor school, has been appointed as Principal Designate of the proposed academy and will lead the academy when it opens.

As sponsor ULT is working in close partnership with the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Lancashire County Council and the Governors of Accrington Moorhead Sports College to successfully deliver an academy in Accrington that will bring out the best in everyone.
